The Sustainability Committee was formed in 2008 when the Town of Menasha Board of Supervisors passed a resolution endorsing sustainability and authorizing the creation of a Sustainability Committee.

Mission Statement:

“To help sustain our community for future generations by using resources in the most responsible way at the right times and for the right reasons.”

The Sustainability Committee meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 5:15p.m. in the Assembly Room at Town Hall.  All are welcome to attend!  Review minutes and agendas online.

2013 Sustainability Accomplishments

  • Hosted a trial town farmer’s market in conjunction with the Park and Recreation Department’s Summer Entertainment Series at Schildt Park
  • Expanded the teaching garden at Schildt Park
  • Expanded the community gardens at Schildt Park to 16 plots with assistance from the Parks Department and planted 8 fruit trees
  • Made site improvements to the community gardens at Schildt Park with assistance from the Parks Department and planted fruit trees
  • Continued to pursue energy efficiency for the Municipal Complex and the Utility District
  • Organized and hosted two electronic recycling events and coordinated them with Neenah’s and Menasha’s e-recycling events
  • Collaborated with HSBN businesses and Parks Department to host Earth Week/Arbor Day events
  • Along with Evergreen CU and SCA Tissue, participated in SSN by handing out educational materials and giving away trees
  • Formed Trail Advisory Committee in collaboration with Parks and Comm. Dev. Departments
  • Continued working with ECOS to create an educational video series on sustainability
  • Participated in Active Community Environments workshops
  • Worked with SCA Tissue to create educational signage for rain gardens and prairie restoration projects
  • Participated in Sustainable Communities Network meetings

 

2014 Sustainability Goals and Objectives

  • Pursue further expansion and site improvements to the teaching garden and community gardens at Schildt Park and explore other possible locations
  • Explore the monetary benefits of collecting waste items to be repurposed
  • Continue to pursue energy efficiency for the Municipal Complex and Utility District and complete an annual review and report to the Town Board
  • Work with ECOS to continue to air educational videos at the end of televised Planning Commission meetings
  • Conduct Department Head training sessions
  • Do quarterly presentations to the Town Board
  • Continue hosting electronics recycling events
  • Encourage participation of HSBN businesses in sustainability activities
  • Collaborate with ECOS, City of Menasha, Town Parks Department, and others to host Earth Day and Arbor Day events
  • Participate in SSN and other sustainability events in the Town
  • Explore the creation of a community flower garden
  • Support the Town’s urban forestry efforts
  • Conduct sustainability reviews for Town departments
  • Investigate partnering with high school eco clubs and invite them to participate in Town sustainability events
  • Continue to participate in the Sustainable Communities Network
