Summary of the Town of Menasha Trail System

The Town of Menasha supports over 13 miles of recreation/pedestrian transportation trails.  The backbone of this trail system is the “Fox Cities Trestle – Friendship Trail” which will ultimately connect Manitowoc, WI with Stevens Point, WI.

The Fox Cities Trestle Trail (See Video) connects the city of Menasha with the town of Menasha via an old abandoned railroad trestle that was converted into a pedestrian/bike path during 2005.  This .8 mile crossing of Little Lake Butte des Morts starts with an “Amsterdam style” lift bridge near the city of Menasha lock site and then transverses across a boardwalk while over looking a wetlands area.  The trail then delivers users to the trestle with spectacular views of the lake, nature and of industry and residential sites which can be enjoyed from the 6 observation platforms located throughout the trestle.  Continuing west, the trail leads you into the town of Menasha at Fritse Park located on N. Lake Street.  The trestle trail continues westward for approximately 3 miles to Clayton Avenue which is the western border of the town of Menasha.  During this section of the trail you will experience a bridge crossing Hwy 41, a wooden boardwalk and bridge and conversion from an asphalt trail to crushed limestone.  Along the crushed limestone section you will pass through the woods while starting a long slow ascent to the town border and beyond.  West of Clayton Avenue, the trail becomes the Friendship Trail and continues for 8 miles to the Winnebago County WIOUWASH Trail connecting Oshkosh to Hortonville. The Friendship Trail can be enjoyed in small sections or stretch your wings and ride the distance.

The Hwy. CB Trail  is part of the Fox Valley Paper Trail and runs the entire length of the Town from County Highway BB (Prospect Avenue) south  to County Highway II (Winchester Road) for 3 miles.  The trail continues south of County Highway II through the Town of Neenah to County Highway JJ where the trail turns east towards the City of Neenah.  Ultimately, you will be able to travel via trail to the Fox River Mall as the Town of Grand Chute plans to connect to the County Highway CB trail at the County Highway CB/County Highway BB intersection.

Future trails - The remaining portion of the trail system is considered arterial/linking trails.  The Town of Menasha continues to explore the financial and physical means by which the trail system can be completed and eventually link to the main trails.

Winter Maintenance - In 2003 the town began maintaining the trails throughout the winter.  This includes snow removal but does not include sanding or salting of the trails.  Please use caution when using the trail system throughout the year.

 Trail Etiquette -

  • Trails are two-way traffic - users should stay right

  • Bikers should slow down when approaching pedestrians

  • When passing, announce your intentions by saying, "Passing on your left"
  • No stopping or standing on the trail (Trestle Trail - use observation areas)
  • Leashed dogs permitted
  • Remove pet waste
  • Please do not litter
